Hey there, Creative Person! Last week you revised something (#0068). Now it’s time to let go of perfecting tendencies and send it out into the world.
Ready. Set. Submit!
🎵Sweet Surrender, Sweet Surrender🎵
Week 3: January 19th–25th, 2025
Before I proposed this January speedrun (#0067), I pulled together a list of places that typically have quick turnaround times.1
Usually, I would recommend you submit each new prose piece/poem/artwork to several places at the same time (aka simultaneous submissions) and skip places that bar the practice. Not necessarily this time.
To give lickety-split responses, some of the places on this list want to evaluate your creative work exclusively. I believe that’s a fair request, especially since you might hear a response in a day (instead of in six months). Be sure to Read The Guidelines to determine if the place allows for simultaneous submissions; if not, either only submit to the one place or skip that one place for others that allow simultaneous submissions.
The dozen places in alphabetical order to submit include:
4 possibilities for artwork
7 poetry options
5 creative nonfiction places
10 fiction opportunities
If you created a poem and a creative nonfiction piece as well as some new artwork for submission this week, you might be able to submit some or all to one of these places. Simultaneous submissions (to more than one place) aren’t the same as multiple submissions (more than one creative work at the same time).
Read The Guidelines.
Bending Genres: fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Follow the guidelines on Submittable.
Note: To submit via Submittable, you’ll need to create a free (for writers and artists) account.
The Colored Lens: speculative fiction and artwork. Here are the definitions and guidelines with a link to the Google form for submissions.
Warning: The Colored Lens is not a secure (httpS) website.
Disjoint’d: poetry only. The email for submissions is somewhere on this page.
Hotch Potch Literature & Art: image-prompted fiction only.
Ink in Thirds: poetry, prose, photography, and visual art. All the deets are on this page.
Intrepidus Ink: fiction only. Guidelines and submission form are available via this page.
Milk Candy Review: fiction only. Here’s the guidelines and submission email page.
ONE ART: poetry only. Guidelines for submissions + cover letter appear on this page.
SmokeLong Quarterly: fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid prose. Submit via Submittable.
Note: I’d say SLQ is a R E A C H publication. Duotrope currently lists 0.18 % of submissions accepted (13.0 avg. days per acceptance) | 0.30% of submitters accepted.
Typishly: fiction and poetry. Submit via Submittable.
Venus, Darling Magazine: prose, poetry, art, and photography via the first-issue theme. Submit via this Google form.
Note: This brand-new lit mag doesn’t have an online presence yet. Looks like this place closed the submission window January 13th.
wildscape: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art. Submit via Duosuma.
Note: This is only the 2nd issue, which might mean a better chance to get published(?).
Note: To submit via Duosuma, you’ll need to create a free (for writers and artists) account.
Waffle Fried: creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction, journalism, and visual art with the theme of longing. Here are the guidelines and link to Duosuma.
Note: This is a call for the 1st issue. Maybe better chance to get published(?).
Next time: Embrace rejection.
It took a couple hours to sort through Chill Subs, which has a response-time filter, and Duotrope’s recent acceptances and rejections, which includes length of time for responses. Both platforms rely on crowdsourcing, information submitted by lit journal editors, and reviews of the lit journals by platform staffers/volunteers. The info isn’t perfect, folks. So set aside a chunk of time if/when you do the research yourself.
